This shows a Zouave in 1870-1871 campaign tenue, the background landscape fits Algeria or Mediterranean Africa. Zouaves units originated near 1830 in colonial Africa, from locals folks, but later (past 1840's) their recruitment became exclusively European and colonial. Their roles were multiple and thus many of these regiments could be considered as elites. Formerly, they were assuming light infantry duties, but quickly they became performing light and line infantry duties as well with skill due to the harsh living conditions as a colonial soldier in Africa and hard trainings.
During the 1870-1871 conflict, Zouaves regiments were used on European continent to fight the Germans and performed extremely well despite how the events turned and saw many a glorious episode, like enraged bayonets charges.
